Soup for Souls

Social Ministry would like to invite you to participate in our February community service event, SOUP FOR SOULS. We will be collecting canned soup/soup packets during the month of February. We will be disbursing the soups to community members in need at the March 3rd Community Dinner.

  • Starting February 4th, there will be a table and our handy blue collection box situated in the hall for you to leave your SOUP FOR SOULS donation.
  • Our kids’ Sunday school class will be helping us by making the poster and with bagging up the soup for distribution. So, check your pantry and the sale ads and help us to make this event a success!

40 Days of Giving

“Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread”

is the stewardship theme this year at First Lutheran. WELCA would like to again challenge the congregation to provide food items so that those that have a need will be able to feel our heartfelt generosity. As we enter into the 40 Days of Lent let us celebrate 40 days of giving, one item daily, 40 items total. Lutheran Social Services this year is relying on generosity to fill their pantry. The panty provides a 3-day emergency food supply to their clients. As we enter into Lent, a time of reflection on God’s abundant generosity in our lives, WELCA is asking members to please consider gifts to the food pantry.

Here is a list of the needed items:

  • Canned meat
  • Coffee (11 oz. size)
  • Tea
  • Powdered milk
  • Paper towels
  • Cereal
  • Oatmeal
  • Wide Noodles
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Saltine crackers
  • Canned vegetables
  • Canned fruit
  • Canned Soup 
  • Boxed sides (potatoes, pasta, rice)

Items can be brought in weekly and placed in the cart by the elevator. Thank you for prayerfully considering this opportunity to share your blessings with others.

We’ve already met with Mary Lou McCann, past years’ Chair for this sale and we thank her for all the info she shared with us. She will continue to be a resource for us as we all work together for a successful sale: the date in October is yet to be determined.

We remind everyone that as you are cleaning out closets this winter we have lots of space in the basement room/rooms designated to hold items until the sale.

If you need assistance with the elevator and unloading, please let us know. We are here to help you! Also please remember the new church office hours starting this month.

If anyone has ideas concerning the sale, please share with us. We want to hear from you.

Distribution is offered to the public with no restrictions, unless otherwise noted.

MONDAY

  • CHOPIN Hall (The Family Center, 1800 N. Blanchard St.) – Food pantry operates from 1-4 p.m. Call 419-422-6401 to schedule.
  • City Mission (520 W. Main Cross St.) – Lunch served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; dinner from 4:30-6 p.m. Public welcome.
  • Maranatha Bible Church (10965 Ohio 613, Van Buren) – Food pantry operates from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 419-422-8238 to schedule.
  • Salvation Army (301 Center St.) – Food pantry operates from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. Bring ID and a piece of mail.
 

TUESDAY

  • City Mission (510 W. Main Cross St.) — Lunch served from 12:30-1:30 p.m.; dinner from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Public welcome.
  • Lutheran Social Services (inside St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1701 Tiffin Ave.) — Food pantry operates from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Hancock County residency is not required, but recipients must show ID or proof of address. Call 419-422-7917 for more information.
  • Salvation Army (301 Center St.) — Food pantry operates from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. Bring ID and a piece of mail.
